What is a Mason?
This can be a very difficult question to answer, because Masonry is what you want to get out of it.
- To some, a Mason is a man who desires to grow spiritually and morally. That does not mean Masonry is a religion. If anything, Masonry emphasizes the need to attend the church of your choice and live your life in accordance with the principles, and morals, of your faith.
- To some, a Mason is a man who is interested in the secrets and mysteries of the universe. That does not make Masonry a “cult” or anti-Christian. What is does is allow him to look at life as an analogy of symbols. The cross is a symbol of Christian faith and salvation. The square and compass are symbols that represent how Masons should live their lives as men, always treating everyone fairly, and without allowing our emotions to dictate our reason.
- To some, a Mason is a member of a charitable organization. That does not mean that Masonry is a charity, rather Masons will assist brother Masons in any way possible, and organizations or individuals worthy of their support. Masons provide millions of dollars to education, public television, prevent blindness, and Shriner hospitals every day.
- To some, a Mason is a man who spends his time with other men at lodge. That does not make Masonry an “all male” sanctuary and it is not meant to be for men who all think and act the same. Nor is it intended to be for men who only come from the same social, economic, or religious backgrounds. Rather, it is meant as a place where Masons can learn more about others and become more knowledgeable of the world and people around him. There are Masonic organizations for women, boys and girls, as well. All of these groups work together to try and make each member a better person.
If a person identifies themselves as a Mason, you can be assured that they are of moral character, that they try to live their lives in accordance with the divine principles of their faith, and that they endeavor to make the world a better place - through actions in their daily lives or through charitable acts in the community.
Why are some things that Masons do secret? Everyone does not have the character to understand and live according to the principles of Freemasonry. Making all of our symbols and ceremonies public knowledge would defeat the purpose of an organization intent on making good men better. Masonry is not for everyone, and our goal has never been to have all men join Freemasons. Our goal is to seek out men of good character who desire to grow as individuals.
Why are we Masons? Because many of us had family members or acquaintances that we respected and admired, and they were Masons. Their actions and lives drew us to Masonry, and we are better for it.
